College & Career Readiness Study Skills

This course is designed to help prospective students improve their learning effectiveness, attitudes, and motivation.
The curriculum covers the following topics: time management, concentration, computer skills using
Microsoft Word, note taking skills, textbook study methods, test taking strategies and critical thinking
skills.

• Overview of path to transition from non-credit to credit learning
• Overview of degrees offered at SUNY Orange, Declaring a Major and Undeclared Major
• Career exploration  
• Navigating the College website and how to use as a resource 
• Admissions/Application process
• Placement Testing -- how to sign up, what to expect, what results mean 
• Financial Aid - FAFSA, paying for college, grants, scholarships, other funding sources (i.e. employment tuition reimbursement)
• Counseling and Advising and Department Advisors 
• Registration and Payment 
• Student Code of Conduct overview 
• Socialization on campus: Clubs, Student Services Fairs and events/trips, Cultural Affairs activities
• How to help insure your success:  Managing school, work, and life; Tips for successful study and test preparation; Note taking; Computer skills and how to upgrade skills and available non-credit computer classes that may assist
• How to ask for help if you need it and resources to help you succeed - tips to stay motivated and to achieve your goal of a degree
