This preparatory program is designed for prospective lifeguard candidates who would like to improve their
swimming ability, endurance, and water-safety competency prior to attempting the American Red Cross
Lifeguard Training prerequisites. Through targeted instruction and progressive skill development, participants
will strengthen their swimming technique, increase stamina, and gain familiarity with the physical demands and
expectations of lifeguard certification.
Participants will work toward developing the ability to:
? Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke
? Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only
? Surface dive to retrieve a 10-lb brick from a depth of 7–10 feet and return it to the surface
? Demonstrate efficient body positioning, breathing rhythm, and stroke mechanics
? Build foundational lifeguarding skills and water confidence
Age Requirement: Ages 15+ (students must be at least 15 by the final day of the actual Lifeguard Certification
course)
